For as long as I can remember, I had a love for cooking because it allowed me to spend time with the beautiful and powerful Haitian queens who came before me Mommy-Na (my great-grandmother), Momma (my grandmother), and Ti-Mama (my mother) taught me how to cook, and each time we prepared food in the kitchen laughs were exchanged, and a whole lot of herbs and spices were involved.
When I went away to college, I struggled with the food options-- it lacked flavor, and was very expensive. It was during this time, that decided to just opt out of my meal plan to save money and I began meal prepping using homemade seasoning blends that reminded me of my mother's cooking. I later graduated and became a scientist and found myself being experimental in my workspace and in my kitchen.
In 2018, the I learned that the FDA recalled a drug used to treat hypertension due to traces of a carcinogen. Having a family history of hypertension sparked my desire to learn more about hypertension.

Only 1/4 of those with hypertension, have it under control.
High blood pressure is more common in non-Hispanic black adults than in non-Hispanic white adults.
Having hypertension puts you at risk for heart disease and stroke, which are leading causes of death in the United States.
